The National Bank of Moldova was established on June 4th, 1991 by a decree of the President of the Republic of Moldova, Mircea Snegur. The first governor of the NBM was Leonid Talmaci.
In the pictures below the twisted stone girdles that surround the churches of the Putna and Cetăţuia Monasteries can be seen. Of course, the three intertwined threads symbolize the Holy Trinity. There are only two intertwined threads on the coin, their significance being obvious.
Other twisted stone girdles from Moldovița and Solca monasteries in Suceava county. The church of Moldovița was founded by Petru Rareș. Solca was founded by Ștefan Tomșa II, ruler of the Principality of Moldavia between 1611-1615 and 1621-1623.
