Mintage: 1.500.000 coins in 1894
798.800 coins in 1900
369.614 coins in 1901
Mintage: 1.500.000 coins in 1894, 798.800 in 1900 and 369.614 in 1901. According to the book Monetele Romāniei (Coins of Romania, Iliescu and Radovici, 2004), the mintage of 798.800 coins is for years 1900 and 1901 together. The 1894 coins were struck at Brussels and the coins from the other years at Hamburg. The silver used for the Hamburg coins seems to be from the used coins of the '70.
Alike the 50 bani and 2 lei pieces, the 1 leu pieces of 1901 are made by modification of the year on the dies manufactured in 1900. As consequence the two digits of 1 differ one from the other in dimension on all values (information received from Mr Radu Lissner). He also sent us the pictures of the coins above.
We can figure how much was such a piece worth by noting that in 1898 a student scholarship rose to 100 lei.
A rare variant of 1 leu 1894 coin
Below is presented a variant of 1 leu 1894. The last three letters from engraver's name, RFF from SCHARFF, are shifted below the rest with almost half of the height of a letter.
The coin pictures below are present on Romanian coins through the kind permission of an anonymous donor.
