24 mm, brass face value 1 (maybe leu), below ROMAN, outer pearl circle | coat of arms of Romania (from the period 1872-1921), outer pearl circle |
The Sugar Factory of Roman (nowadays in the Neamū county) was built in 1899, based on Belgian capital. This company bought afterwards the sugar factory of Sascut (that later on issued tokens sharing the same aspect, only having 1 SASCUT instead of 1 ROMAN). In the present (2009) Agrana Roman remained the only sugar factory functioning in the Moldavian area.
The piece belongs to the former collection of Mr. C.C.. Judging by the coat of arms, the token can be dated back to 1899-1921.
This token has sometimes been considered to be the essay (actually inexistant, unfortunately) of the 1 roman coin, to be issued as result of the monetary reform planned in 1860, during the rule of Alexandru Ioan Cuza. Such an error is to be found in the Numismatic catalogue [Catalog numismatic] printed by the History Museum of Moldavia in 1970.
