Year 2009 approximately corresponds to the Chinese year of the earth ox (approximately, because the Chinese year does not begin on January 1st). The Chinese zodiac uses a 60 year cycle. Each year is governed by an animal and an element. The twelve animals are, in order: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. The five elements are metal, wood, water, fire and earth.
