23 mm diameter, 5 g, silver 83.5%, copper 16.5%, grained edge denomination "1 L", year 1884, Romanian coat of arms, letter B and wheat ear, the signs of Romanian mint, outer pearl circle | inscription "CAROL I REGE AL ROMANIEI" meaning "KING OF ROMANIA" and CAROL I head facing left, outer pearl circle. Under the neck lies KULLRICH, the engraver's name. Mintage: 1.000.000 coins in 1884 400.000 coins in 1885 |
1.000.000 coins were struck in 1884 and only 400.000 in 1885. There are pieces of 1884 with denomination letter L broken. As you can see in the images above, for the 1884 and 1885 1 leu coins the same Carol I effigy was used. For the 50 bani pieces from the same years (presented on the previous page of the site) two different effigies were used.
