The steel crown was created for the coronation of king Carol I in 1881. It has been made out of the steel of a Turkish cannon captured as spoils of war at Plevna by the Romanian soldiers.

Nihil sine deo was the motto of the House of Hohenzollern, also used by the kings of Romania. Almost all Romanian coins struck between 1867 and 1947 bear this motto, either on a ribbon belonging to the coat of arms, either as inscription on the edge (or both).
