CFR stands for Căile Ferate Române (= Romanian Railways), the state railway carrier, which existed under this name between 1880 and 1998.

The Romanian Railways, established in 1880, owned a Consumption Store that used various tokens - e.g. for bread, meat or firewood. The general appearance and the spelling seem to suggest a dating of the token in the period before the First World War.

In 1941 the firm owned by engraver Mauriciu Carniol (Carniol son, 1866-1945) was located in Bucharest, Carol Street 24.

Nothing is known about the CFR Deva Gara tokens, nor why they are perforated, nor what the very unusual value of 4 lei could have been used for.
