mint set 2010

The 2010 mint set comprises the 1 ban, 5, 10 and 50 bani that entered circulation at July 1st 2005.

It also comprises the anniversary coin of 50 bani dedicated to Aurel Vlaicu and his plane, in a proof variant with faces placed in medal style. In 2010 were also struck 5000 coins of 50 bani with Aurel Vlaicu in proof, for collectors, that differ from the set variant by the coin face orientation, the variant in the set being medal-style.

The set medal is dedicated to the anniversary of 150 years since the foundation of the 1st modern Romanian University in the city of Iași, nowadays called "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" after the prince that founded it. The University of Iași is the oldest modern university of Romania. This event, big milestone of the advancement of the Romanian people and of the Romanian state (through education), was unfortunately not celebrated through the issuing of a anniversary coin, just like the sexcentenial of the first written mentioning of the city of Iași - incontestable cultural capital city of Romania - has gone unremarked in 2008.

On the cardboard on which the coins are fixed a picture of the main building of the University is reproduced, with the main entrance in background and with the statue of the Romanian historian A.D. Xenopol (1847-1920) in foreground.

On the cardboard on which the coins are fixed a picture of the main building of the University is reproduced, with the uphill entrance (the entrance into the "Gheorghe Asachi" Technical University part of the building) and with the statue of Mihail Kogălniceanu (Romanian politician and historian, 1817-1891).
