About the Apahida Hoard [1]
The treasure was found in 1968 by some workers. Before the authorities found out, they melted down some of the pieces.
110 pieces were recovered, which came from the tomb of a prince, from an iron-locked chest. Most of the objects are made of gold, decorated with almandine. Almandine is a semi-precious stone, a red-brown garnet. The pieces were produced in the Eastern Roman Empire, in the 5th-6th centuries.
The treasure includes 27 heraldic shield-like ornaments, 29 rosettes of various sizes, two votive eagles (the ones represented on the coin), an ornamental plaque, some buckles (two of which are large, one of which is represented on the coin), two ornate iron bit mouthpieces, and a glass vessel.
The eagles are 114 mm high, 58 mm wide, 5 mm thick, and weigh approximately 77.5 g. The large buckle has a ring diameter of 48 mm and a mass of 267 g.
The eagle looking to the left also appeared on the 100 lei coin from 2003 - Apahida Eagle, which is also part of the History of Gold series.
